Ideal Candidate Statement
Ohlone Community College District is currently seeking an armed Police Officer I to join the Campus Police Services team. The ideal candidate will uphold the highest standards of moral character, integrity, and professionalism while demonstrating the ability to work in a dynamic and ever-changing college setting. The ideal candidate will have the ability to adapt to a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and mandatory over-time when applicable. The ideal candidate will work in a team environment and must have the ability to develop positive working relationships. The successful candidate can multi-task, prioritize, and meet mandatory/regulatory deadlines.

In addition, the ideal candidate will:

  • Be a sworn peace officer in the State of California within the previous three years
  • Hold a valid California POST Basic Police Academy certificate or hold a valid California POST Basic Course Waiver (Lateral or Academy Graduate)
  • Meet all other requirements for peace officers as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)

Position Description
Under the direction of the Chief of Campus Police Services, assist the Chief in planning, organizing, and directing the day-to-day activities and the productivity of officers and support personnel; assure accuracy and thoroughness of officer-submitted police reports; conduct patrols of campus grounds and assigned areas on foot and in a vehicle as necessary.
The Campus Police Officer I position is the first level for certified peace officers. Incumbents are fully competent to perform all the duties of the position.



Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide assistance to the Chief and campus police personnel as assigned including training and providing work direction to assigned staff.
  2. Prepare, maintain, submit, and issue a variety of documents including creating and updating crime report forms, track crime statistics, daily activities, alarm activations, dispatches, field contacts, restraining orders, and other information.
  3. Investigate crimes, incidents, suspicious persons and vehicles; conduct searches and collect and preserve evidence; arrests of crime suspects and interview victims, complainants, witnesses.
  4. Open and secure campus and respond to fire and burglar alarm activations; investigate and enforce unauthorized use of facilities.
  5. Enforce College, County, State and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  6. Lead and participate in patrols of campus grounds and assigned areas on foot and in a vehicle.
  7. Respond to service calls, including medical, animal control, crowd control, traffic, and vehicle service calls.
  8. Collect and deliver legal tender, such as parking machines, State checks, and other monies.
  9. Conduct traffic stops and issue traffic and parking citations and conduct welfare checks.
  10. Operate a variety of safety and office equipment such as, but not limited to, two-way radio, pepper spray, baton, handcuffs, video surveillance systems, digital camera, automated external defibrillator (AED), computer and assigned software, and other assigned equipment.
  11. Coordinate efforts with police departments to assure appropriate response in emergency situations and respond to threats in conjunction with appropriate authorities.
  12. Oversee and implement the Student Escort Program including providing training and work direction to part time Student Escort Officers; assure student compliance with College policies and procedures.
  13. Provide dispatch duties; conduct public relations.
  14. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  15. Attend a variety of meetings, trainings, and workshop activities as required.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of appropriate California P.O.S.T. requirements including graduation from a California P.OS.T. academy within the preceding 36 months and minimum medical standards as set by P.O.S.T. or possession of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate;
AND
Graduation from high school supplemented by college-level coursework in criminal psychology or related field;
AND
Completion of a school police officer course must be obtained within two years of employment per P.O.S.T;
AND
Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Other Requirements

  • Valid First Aid/CPR and AED license issued by an authorized agency.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license.

Physical Characteristics
This position requires physical abilities, including but not limited to: standing and/or sitting for prolonged periods; occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and twisting; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling light and moderate amounts of weight.
