About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University invites applications for Strategic Alliance Development Director - Cybersercurity and Communications at the Roux Institute. The Roux Institute is an engine of innovation, talent, and economic growth in Portland, the state of Maine, and the region. This opportunity is centered on the primary goal of bringing research programs and organizations to the Roux Institute from around North America.

The Strategic Alliance Development Director (SADD) will act as a central point of contact for the Roux Institute related to communications and cybersecurity (encompassing areas such as blockchain, internet of things, financial technologies, and secure communications), and will develop pathways and research partnerships and initiatives. The SADD will work in a highly self-directed mode, and in collaboration with fellow SADDs with complimentary domain expertise, both academic and operational leadership at the Roux Institute, and with professionals throughout Northeastern's global research university system.

The SADD will help shape our research enterprise aimed at advancing the success of our partners, the regional economy, and societal capability. This will be accomplished through identification of candidate corporate, academic, government or non-profit strategic research partners, developing a progressively rich relationship targeted at mutual positive return on investment, and closing collaborative partnership agreements based on co-location and aligned strategic goals. It is expected that the research will be performed at the Roux Institute in Portland, ME, and/or within the partner company if located in (or relocated to) Maine, and leverage the Tier 1 research resources of Northeastern's Global Research University System.

Responsibilities:
The overarching responsibilities of this position include:
  • Understand the specific research goals of the Roux Institute, its faculty and Partner Organizations at a level of depth that will enable identification of new collaboration opportunities in computational sciences, and other fields.
  • Establishes effective marketing efforts, engagement & outreach opportunities and relationship management strategies for Portland/Roux research priorities.
  • Identifies specific prospects to approach while communicating the specific value proposition for their research and use case, and how it aligns with the Roux Institute research strategic plans.
  • Maintains current understanding of industry trends and developments that affect the market and Portland location.
  • Identify, engage, manage, and close opportunities with academic, industrial, government, and non-profit research collaborators whose interests align with and complement the research underway at the Roux Institute.
  • Engage, manage, and close opportunities nationwide in the area of cybersecurity and communications
  • Collaborative engagement across a team of other disciplinary Strategic Alliance Development Directors in order to share relevant leads and identify synergistic opportunities is a must.
  • Meets with campus stakeholders, including faculty, research leaders, Research Development, and University Advancement, to identify research sponsorship opportunities and advise on existing relationships, valuation and packaging.
  • Execute the strategic research development plan devised by the Senior Vice Provost for Portland and the Directors of Research at the Roux Institute.
  • Prepare and give business reviews to the Institute Leadership team regarding progress and challenges to identifying, engaging, managing, and closing new partners.

Qualifications:
  • BS in engineering or a related field
  • 8-10 years of experience in business development and/or strategic program management relating to scientific or translational research.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and political acumen skills.
  • Thorough analytical and written communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of sponsorships in industry, higher education, non-profits, and/or cultural institutions
  • A demonstrated ability to identify and leverage relevant governmental (Federal, state) funding opportunities

Preferred Qualifications
Entrepreneurial, energetic, and collaborative leadership skills. Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences and settings. A strategic mindset. Solutions oriented, problem solving mentality a must. Ability to work in a fast-paced and innovative setting. He/she must have experience working independently and as a member of a team.

There is expectation of significant travel requirements to build partner relationships and engage with Roux Institute stakeholders in Portland, ME, Boston, MA, and across the US.

Additional Information:
This position will report to the Senior Vice Provost for Portland and Academic Lead for the Roux Institute and will be a member of a team of 5-6 disciplinary Strategic Alliance Development Managers. This position will work closely with research leadership at the Boston campus.

This position is not bound to a specific location; remote work and travel is therefore anticipated.
