Job Summary
  • This position requires the candidate to successfully pass a thorough background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination
  • The position requires driving a university vehicle so the candidate must have a valid driver's license and good driving record of less than 6 points
  • This position is a uniformed position required to maintain appearance and grooming standards in accordance with DPSS uniformed personnel dress code
  • Under the general supervision of the DPSS Security Supervisor, Security Officers provide superior security and customer service
  • Officers protect the assets and property of the University, ensure public safety and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies, and represent the University of Michigan.
  • Officers maintain confidentiality in police and/or security matters
  • Officers provide traffic and crowd control for special events and University sponsored activities

We are currently hiring Michigan Medicine Hospital Security Officers; however DPSS employs security officers within Housing Security and University Security Services (detailed descriptions below):

MICHIGAN MEDICINE HOSPITAL SECURITY
  • Officers interact with staff, patients and visitors in a wide variety of circumstances
  • De-escalate potentially violent and non-violent situations
  • Work with medical staff to control violent patient behavior
  • They patrol the medical center and off site health system buildings
  • They prepare incident and security reports
  • They offer a multitude of services to their customers including but not limited to: escorts, way finding, unlocks, motorists assists, well-being checks, and funds transports
  • They monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarm systems
  • They control patient and lost and found property

HOUSING SECURITY
  • The primary responsibility of a Housing Security Officer is to ensure the safety of residents, staff and guests utilizing University Housing owned properties
  • Officers patrol Housing properties to deter crime, and respond to the needs of residents through active engagement and partnership with the community
  • Officers are responsible for responding to and evaluating requests for emergency assistance
  • They are responsible for interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects
  • Officers prepare general incident reports (for general assistance and criminal complaints), and are required to participate in the judicial process for criminal prosecution as well as internal university disciplinary referral processes

Required Qualifications*
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary
  • Some prior security related experience is necessary
  • Knowledge and/or experience of enforcement of fire, safety and security
  • Must be able to assist emergency response personnel with maneuvering persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious; may be required to restrain someone with or without assistance
  • As matter of routine, officers must be able to effectively communicate and interact with diverse populations
  • Officers must be able to observe/detect/ identify individuals, safety hazards, and criminal elements within their patrol areas
  • Act calmly and authoritatively in emergency situation; utilize emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, etc. and perform life saving techniques such as CPR and First Aid
  • The position requires stationary and mobile patrol duties for a minimum of 8 hours per shift. Security personnel are regularly required to ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of their routine patrol, and move departmental equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers from one location to another
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and must possess basic keyboarding skills
  • Departments are a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, weekends, afternoons, holidays and occasional unanticipated overtime
  • This is a uniformed position required to maintain standards of appearance by following the DPSS uniformed personnel dress code

Desired Qualifications*
  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is desired
  • Previous experience working in a university and/or healthcare setting is desirable

All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
